CDC offers evaluations to confirm or discount a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life. The result of a neurological disorder that affects the functioning of the brain, autism and its associated behaviors have been estimated to occur in as many as two to six in 1000 individuals. Autism is four times more prevalent in boys than girls, and knows no racial, ethnic, or social boundaries. Family income, lifestyle, and educational levels do not affect the chance of autism’s occurrence (Autism Society of America 2004).
CDC can evaluate a child under the age of five to determine if a diagnosis of an Autism Spectrum Disorder is appropriate.
The evaluation is at no cost to the family and includes recommendations, referrals, and resources as warranted. ASD evaluations generally take up to four hours to complete with a discussion related to the diagnosis and an opportunity to ask questions following the testing.
To request an ASD evaluation, please call CDC at 1-800-914-4779 and say, “I would like to have my child screened for Autism.” Please see How to Make a Referral for more information.
